수상 소감에 나타난 한국어와 영어의 언어문화적 차이
이 연구에서는 한국어와 영어 수상 소감을 비교 분석하여 한국어와 영어 수상 소감에 나타난 언어문화적 차이를 알아보고자 하였다. 이에 이 연구에서는 각각 15개의 한국어와 영어 수상 소감 중 총 350개의 수상 소감 표현을 대상으로 수상 소감 표현 유형의 분포 차이를 통계 분석하였다. 그 결과 한국어와 영어의 수상 소감 표현 사용에 유의미한 차이가 있는 것으로 밝혀졌다. (χ2 = 24.639, p < 0.01) 그리고 한국어와 영어의 수상 소감에 나타난 수상 소감 표현의 사용 양상을 살펴보았다. 또한 이러한 한국어와 영어 수상 소감의 차이의 원인을 알아보기 위해 개인주의와 집단주의, 맥락 이론 그리고 이 연구의 분석 결과를 중심으로 한국어와 영어의 언어문화적 차이를 논의하였다. 그 결과 한국은 약속하기나 인사하기와 같은 간접 표현, 겸손 표현, 예절 표현을 사용하는 “고맥락 의사소통”의 집단주의 사회인 반면 영어권 국가 중 하나인 미국은 직접표현을 사용하는 “저맥락 의사소통”의 개인주의 사회라는 것을 알 수 있었다. 마지막으로 성별, 나이와 같은 사회적 요인과 수상 소감의 관계 분석 및 한국어 수상 소감의 통시적 분석을 추후 연구 과제로 제시하였다.
Linguistic and Cultural Differences in Korean and English Acceptance Speeches
This study aimed to identify linguistic and cultural differences in Korean and English acceptance speeches through comparative analysis. Specifically, statistical analyses were conducted of 350 award acceptance expressions in 15 Korean and 15 English acceptance speeches, indicating a significant difference in the uses of award acceptance expressions by language (χ2 = 24.639, p < 0.01). The uses of award acceptance expressions in Korean and English acceptance speeches are then described. In addition, to explain the dissimilarities between Korean and English acceptance speeches, the linguistic and cultural differences are discussed in terms of individualism and collectivism, context theory, and the results of this study. In particular, Korea is a collectivist society with “high-context communication” that employs indirect, humble, and polite expressions such as making promises and offering greetings, whereas the US, an English-speaking country, is an individualistic society with “low-context communication” that uses direct expressions. Future research should examine the relationship between social factors (e.g., gender and age) and Korean acceptance speeches and conduct a diachronic analysis of Korean acceptance speeches.
