New opportunities for specialized advanced Korean language study for an MA degree -- Funding available for qualified students

The University of Hawaii at M?noa (UHM) has been awarded continued federal funding for the Korean Flagship Program designed to help qualified post-BA students, as well as college graduates now in the work place but wishing to return to school, to achieve superior Korean language proficiency through pursuing a two-year MA degree. (Visit http://www2.hawaii.edu/~flagship for details). The aim is to produce individuals with professional competence in Korean. They will be capable of pursuing professional careers in their chosen fields, whether in the federal government, private organizations, agencies, or businesses -- with sufficient Korean language abilities to work in Korean in those fields.
During the first year, students receive intensive, task-based Korean language instruction at UHM, along with individualized domain-specific tutoring. They also benefit from the substantial Korean heritage population and cultural activities in Honolulu as well as on campus. This is followed by a second year of intensive immersion (Korean Flagship Overseas Program, KFOP) at Korea University in Seoul, Korea, with university courses, individualized professional internships, structured Korean living arrangements, and Korean peer tutoring.
The Master of Arts in Korean for Professions (Dept. of East Asian Languages and Literature) is earned by the successful completion of the program and demonstrate the ability to use Korean in an academic discipline or occupational area at a professional level (ILR 3, ACTFL “superior”).
Students who are US citizens are eligible for Flagship Fellowships awarded by the Institute of International Education. A separate application is required. If awarded this competitive fellowship, students will receive full coverage of tuition and living expenses while at UH Manoa and in Korea, as well as travel expenses on the condition that they fulfill a post-graduation service obligation to the US government (For details, visit http://www.iie.org/programs/nsep/flagship/default.htm.). Also, upon availability, a limited number of students may receive partial UH financial support without the subsequent service obligation.
For admission requirements for the MA program, please refer to: http://www.hawaii.edu/graduatestudies/fields/html/departments/hijkl/korean/korean.htm.
